Arles (Provence)ארל
Provence, France
Arles, on the Rhône at the head of the Camargue delta in Provence, southern France, began as a Greek trading post and became the Roman city of Arelate, whose monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The emperor Constantine II was born there in 316, and in 314 it hosted the first church council called by Constantine I. Its bishops were leading figures of the church in Gaul, above all Caesarius, bishop from 502 to 542. Arles also had one of the oldest Jewish communities in the region, documented from the fifth century, and was a centre of medieval Provençal Jewry, where the translator Samuel ibn Tibbon lived, until the expulsion orders of 1498–1501.
