Berkeley, California
Berkeley is a city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in California, United States, named after the philosopher George Berkeley. It grew up around the University of California, created in 1868, which became a leading centre of physics. Ernest Lawrence founded his cyclotron laboratory there in 1931, and the element berkelium is named after the university. In the 1960s the campus was the scene of the Free Speech Movement. Berkeley was also an early base of Tibetan Buddhism in America: the Nyingma teacher Tarthang Tulku established the Tibetan Nyingma Meditation Center there in 1969 and later moved his Dharma Publishing house to the area.
