Brescia

Italy

Brescia, a city in Lombardy, northern Italy, was the Roman Brixia and later a Lombard ducal seat, whose monastery of San Salvatore-Santa Giulia is now a UNESCO site. An ancient bishopric, it was ruled by Venice from 1426 until the Napoleonic era. In 1491-94 the Jewish printer Gershom Soncino worked here, issuing a small-format Hebrew Bible in 1494 that Luther later used for his translation, and the city's canons included the Christian Hebraist Marco Marini. The mathematician Niccolò Tartaglia was born here and survived the French sack of 1512. Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI, was born at nearby Concesio and was schooled and ordained in Brescia.
