Capuaקאפואה

Campania, Italy

Capua is a town on the Volturno river in the province of Caserta, Campania, southern Italy. It was built in 856 near the site of ancient Capua, the great Roman-era city now called Santa Maria Capua Vetere, and later became the centre of a Lombard principality. It is the seat of an archdiocese: the Jesuit theologian Robert Bellarmine was its archbishop from 1602. In the thirteenth century it also had Jewish scholars; in the early 1260s the young Abraham Abulafia, later founder of prophetic Kabbalah, studied Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed there under a philosopher-physician named Hillel, probably Hillel ben Samuel of Verona, and he later returned to teach students in Capua.
