Città di Castello is a town on the upper Tiber in the province of Perugia, Umbria, central Italy. It stands on the site of Tifernum Tiberinum, an Umbrian town that allied with Rome in the 3rd century BCE and prospered under the empire. In the Middle Ages it was a bishopric known as Civitas Castelli, and it later came back under papal rule; in the 15th century the Vitelli family dominated the city and patronised artists. Pope Celestine II (d. 1144), born Guido di Castello, may have been born there. The town also had a Jewish community, where Obadiah of Bertinoro, the Mishnah commentator, served as rabbi before setting out for Jerusalem in 1486.
