Chicago, IL
Illinois, USA
Chicago, in Illinois, United States, was organised as a town in 1833 and grew rapidly, rebuilding after the Great Fire of 1871. During the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition the city hosted the first World's Parliament of Religions, where Anagarika Dharmapala represented Theravada Buddhism. The University of Chicago became a major research centre: Enrico Fermi's team achieved the first controlled nuclear chain reaction there in 1942, and the theologian Paul Tillich taught there from 1962 until his death in 1965. The city's Jewish community founded institutions such as the Hebrew Theological College in 1921, now in suburban Skokie. Chicago is also the birthplace of Pope Leo XIV, elected in 2025.
