Emden

Germany

Emden is a seaport on the river Ems in East Frisia, Lower Saxony, in northwestern Germany near the Dutch border. In the 16th century Countess Anna of Oldenburg invited the reformer John a Lasco to lead its Protestant church; during the Dutch Revolt the town drew Protestant refugees, and the Synod of Emden of 1571 is generally regarded as the founding of the Dutch Reformed Church. The Anabaptist leader Menno Simons debated a Lasco at Emden in 1544. The town also had a long-established Jewish community: Rabbi Jacob Emden (1697-1776), the halachist and anti-Sabbatean polemicist and son of the Chacham Tzvi, took his surname from it after accepting its rabbinate in 1728.
