Emmerich am Rhein
Germany
Emmerich am Rhein is a town in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, the last German town on the Rhine before the river enters the Netherlands. Its collegiate church of St Martin dates to the eleventh century; the town belonged to the Duchy of Cleves from 1371 and joined the Hanseatic League in 1407. Heinrich Bullinger was sent as a boy to its St Martin's Latin school, where the Devotio Moderna of the Brethren of the Common Life shaped him before his Reformation career. A Jewish community existed in the town from the early seventeenth century, with a prayer house and later a synagogue. Most of the town was destroyed in October 1944.
