Marche (Italy)
Fermo is a hill town in the Marche region of central Italy, founded by Rome as the Latin colony of Firmum Picenum in 264 BCE. In the Middle Ages it was repeatedly besieged in the wars between emperors and popes, and it later lay within the Papal States. Felice Peretti was its bishop from 1571 to 1577 and founded its seminary. As Pope Sixtus V he raised Fermo to an archdiocese in 1589 and established its university. The Jewish poet Immanuel of Rome, who wrote the Hebrew Mahberot as well as verse in Italian, is generally said to have died in Fermo around 1332.
