Frankfurt an der Oder
Frankfurt an der Oder is a city on the Oder River in eastern Germany, opposite the Polish town of Słubice and distinct from Frankfurt am Main. A member of the Hanseatic League from 1430, it was home to the Viadrina, Brandenburg's first university, founded in 1506 and closed in 1811, whose students included the brothers Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt; it was re-established as a European university in 1991. The city also had a Jewish community and was a notable centre of Hebrew printing, where a complete Talmud was printed in 1697-99. Rabbi Joseph Teomim, author of the halachic super-commentary Pri Megadim, served as its rabbi from 1782 until his death in 1792.
