Chicago (World's Parliament of Religions)

Chicago, in the U.S. state of Illinois, was incorporated as a town in 1833 and grew into one of the largest cities in the United States. Jews began arriving soon afterwards: German Jewish immigrants founded the city's first congregation, Kehilath Anshe Mayriv, in 1847, and from the 1870s a larger wave from Eastern Europe settled around Maxwell Street on the Near West Side. By 1930 the community numbered about 275,000, and West Rogers Park is today the hub of the city's Orthodox life. In 1893, during the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago hosted the World's Parliament of Religions, where Swami Vivekananda's opening-day address made Vedanta known to a wide Western audience; the Reform rabbi Kaufmann Kohler was among the keynote speakers.
