Joppa
Israel
Joppa (Jaffa) is an ancient Mediterranean port now part of the city of Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel. It appears in Egyptian records of Thutmose III's conquests and in the Amarna letters. In the Hebrew Bible it is the port from which Jonah sailed for Tarshish and through which cedars of Lebanon were brought for the Temple in Jerusalem. In the Acts of the Apostles, Peter raised Tabitha (Dorcas) here and received the vision of clean and unclean animals that opened the mission to the Gentiles. Tel Aviv grew from a neighbourhood founded on the dunes north of Jaffa in 1909, and the two were joined in a single municipality in 1950.
