Kanpur
Kanpur (Cawnpore), on the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, northern India, was a major British garrison and industrial town, nicknamed the 'Manchester of the East' and known for its leather industry, and a centre of the 1857 uprising, when rebels under Nana Sahib besieged its British garrison. The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur was established there in 1959, and the mathematician Harish-Chandra came from the city. The Deobandi scholar Ashraf Ali Thanwi (d. 1943) taught for about fourteen years at a madrasa in Kanpur before returning to Thana Bhawan.
