Meauxמו
Île-de-France (France)
Meaux is a town on the Marne River in the Seine-et-Marne department, about 40 km east of Paris, France, known for its cathedral and for Brie de Meaux cheese. Its bishops include Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, the celebrated preacher who held the see from 1681 to 1704 and was nicknamed the Eagle of Meaux; in the sixteenth century the town was also an early centre of French Protestant reform. Meaux was the birthplace of the thirteenth-century Tosafist Rabbi Yechiel of Paris, known in Latin as Vives of Meaux, who headed the Paris yeshiva from 1225 and was the chief Jewish spokesman at the 1240 Disputation of Paris.
