Monnikhuizen

Netherlands

Monnikhuizen was a Carthusian charterhouse near Arnhem, the capital of Gelderland in the eastern Netherlands, a city on the Nederrijn that received city rights in 1233. The monastery was founded in the first half of the fourteenth century under the dukes of Guelders. The reformer Geert Groote, founder of the Devotio Moderna movement, spent several years as a guest of the Carthusians after his conversion in 1374, guided by Henry of Kalkar, prior of Monnikhuizen. Arnhem itself is remembered for the 1944 battle for its Rhine bridge during Operation Market Garden.
