Munich

Bavaria, Germany

Munich is the capital of Bavaria in southern Germany and the seat of the Catholic archdiocese of Munich and Freising. In the fourteenth century the Franciscan philosopher William of Ockham found refuge here at the court of Emperor Louis IV and died here in 1347. Its Ludwig Maximilian University, moved here in 1826, became a leading centre of physics and chemistry, where Wilhelm Röntgen and Arnold Sommerfeld taught. Eugenio Pacelli, later Pius XII, served as papal nuncio in Munich from 1917, and Joseph Ratzinger, later Benedict XVI, studied there and was archbishop in 1977-82. Gershom Scholem earned his doctorate at the university with a thesis on the Sefer ha-Bahir, and Muhammad Iqbal received his doctorate there in 1907.
