Pasadena, California

Pasadena is a city in Los Angeles County, California, about 16 km northeast of downtown Los Angeles; it was incorporated in 1886 and has staged the Tournament of Roses parade since 1890. It is a major centre of science. The California Institute of Technology, founded in 1891 as Throop University, set up a biology division under Thomas Hunt Morgan in 1928, and its early growth was shaped by George Ellery Hale, founder of the nearby Mount Wilson Observatory. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is the city's largest employer. Pasadena is also the birthplace of B. Alan Wallace, the American scholar and teacher of Tibetan Buddhism.
