Castile (Spain)

Segovia is a city in Castile, central Spain, known for its Roman aqueduct, its late Gothic cathedral and its Alcázar; the old city and aqueduct have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. A favoured residence of Castilian kings, it saw Isabella I proclaimed queen of Castile in 1474. Its important medieval Jewish community grew in the late Middle Ages; the kabbalist Joseph Gikatilla, author of Sha'arei Orah, worked mainly in Segovia, and its main synagogue was seized in 1410 and turned into the church of Corpus Christi, later a convent. In the sixteenth century John of the Cross served as prior of the Discalced Carmelite monastery there, and his remains have rested in Segovia since 1593.
