Dublin
Dublin, on Ireland's east coast, is the capital of Ireland, and was capital of the Irish Free State from 1922. Vikings established a fortified base there in 841, taking its name from an earlier Christian settlement, and from 1204 Dublin Castle was the centre of Anglo-Norman and later English rule. Under Elizabeth I its medieval cathedrals were turned to Protestant use and Trinity College was founded (1592). John Henry Newman was the first rector of the Catholic University of Ireland there (1854-1858). Ireland's first synagogue was founded in Dublin in 1660, and the community grew with largely Lithuanian immigration in the late nineteenth century; Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog served as rabbi of Dublin and Chief Rabbi of Ireland until 1936.
