Zürich
Zürich is the largest city in Switzerland and the capital of its canton; it began as the Roman settlement of Turicum. From 1519 Huldrych Zwingli, preaching at the Grossmünster, made it a leading centre of the Protestant Reformation, and in January 1525 Conrad Grebel and his circle performed there the first known adult baptism associated with the Reformation, a founding moment of the Anabaptist movement. A medieval Jewish community, attested from 1273, was destroyed in the Black Death persecution of 1349, and Jews were barred from the city from 1423 until the 19th century; a new community was founded after Jewish emancipation in 1862. The University of Zurich dates from 1833.
