Tours

France

Tours is a city on the Loire in central France, the Roman Caesarodunum. Its fourth-century bishop Martin of Tours founded the monastery of Marmoutier and became one of the most venerated Western saints. His disciple Sulpicius Severus wrote his life, and his shrine made the city a major pilgrimage centre. In the sixth century Bishop Gregory of Tours wrote his history of the Franks there, and from 796 Alcuin of York led a monastery at Tours under Charlemagne. Simon de Brion, the future Pope Martin IV, was treasurer of the church of St Martin. The Portuguese-born Jewish physician Elijah Montalto died at Tours in 1616 while travelling with the French court.
