Ulm

Germany

Ulm is a city on the Danube in Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany, founded around 850. As a free imperial city it prospered through trade in the late Middle Ages, and in 1377 its citizens began building Ulm Minster, whose 161.5-metre steeple, completed in 1890, makes it the second-tallest church in the world. The Dominican mystic Henry Suso spent his final years in Ulm and died there in 1366. The city became Protestant during the Reformation in 1530. Johannes Kepler completed the printing of his Rudolphine Tables there in 1627, and Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in 1879. Bombing in 1944 destroyed much of the old town.
