Castile (Spain)
Valladolid is a city in north-central Spain, today the seat of government of Castile and León. By the fifteenth century it was a residence of the kings of Castile; Isabella and Ferdinand married there in 1469, Christopher Columbus died there in 1506, and it briefly served as the royal capital from 1601 to 1606. Its university dates from 1241. In 1550-1551 it hosted the Valladolid debate over the treatment of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, in which Bartolomé de las Casas argued. The city also had a medieval Jewish community; the kabbalist Moses de León, who circulated the Zohar and whom most modern scholars regard as its main author, lived in Guadalajara and Valladolid before settling in Ávila.
