Antisthenes was a Greek philosopher of the late 5th and early 4th century BCE, a devoted follower of Socrates and a teacher in Athens. He emphasized virtue, self-sufficiency, and a simple life, and he was regarded by later tradition as a forerunner, and sometimes founder, of the Cynic way of thought. His many writings are lost apart from fragments and reports.
