Rabbi Meir bar Yitzchak, known as the Sheliach Tzibbur (the community's prayer leader), was an eleventh-century scholar and cantor of Worms in the Rhineland. He is remembered above all as the author of Akdamut Milin, the celebrated Aramaic poem recited on Shavuot in Ashkenazi congregations before the Torah reading. Its ninety verses form a double alphabetical acrostic and spell out his name, exalting God as Creator, the giving of the Torah, and the faithfulness of the people of Israel.
