The fivefold cosmic order

Buddhism sees the universe running on five kinds of natural law at once — not the decrees of any ruler.

The "fivefold cosmic order" (Pali pañca niyāma, "five kinds of lawfulness") is a teaching, developed in the Theravāda commentarial tradition, that the universe runs on several different sorts of natural regularity at the same time. Its main purpose is to give a balanced picture of cause and effect — and especially to stop people from over-explaining everything by a single principle. Buddhism has no creator-god issuing commands here; instead, events unfold according to built-in patterns of nature.

The five orders are: first, the physical order (utu-niyāma), the lawfulness of inorganic nature — seasons, weather, heat and cold, the behavior of matter. Second, the biological order (bīja-niyāma), the lawfulness of living things — how a seed grows into its own kind of plant, how heredity works. Third, the karmic order (kamma-niyāma), the moral lawfulness by which intentional good or bad actions tend to bring corresponding pleasant or painful results. Fourth, the psychological order (citta-niyāma), the lawfulness of how the mind works — how thoughts arise and follow one another. Fifth, the order of the Dharma (dhamma-niyāma), the deep regularities of reality itself, such as the remarkable events traditionally said to accompany a buddha's awakening. That makes all five.

The quiet but important point of this list is balance. Not everything that happens to you is the fruit of your past moral deeds; sickness, for instance, might come from physical causes rather than punishment. By naming five distinct kinds of lawfulness, the teaching guards against the fatalistic mistake of crediting or blaming karma for absolutely everything, while still affirming that moral cause and effect is real and operates alongside the rest.
