Communion in Both Kinds

Bread alone, or bread and cup? A question that helped spark reform

This concerns whether the laity receive both the consecrated bread and the cup at Communion, or the bread alone. Paul speaks of both in 1 Corinthians 11. The East has always given both kinds, while the medieval West restricted the cup to the clergy—a grievance of the Hussites and later Protestants. The Second Vatican Council restored optional lay communion in both kinds in the Roman Catholic Church. The traditions thus differ historically.
