Mariology (Doctrine of Mary)
How the Church honors the Mother of the Lord — and where traditions part
Mariology is teaching concerning the Virgin Mary's role, holiness, and honor within the work of salvation. Early texts like the Protoevangelium of James, the Council of Ephesus, and later definitions shaped it. Traditions differ markedly: Catholics affirm the Immaculate Conception and Assumption as dogmas, the Orthodox keep the Dormition and perpetual virginity, while many Protestants honor Mary but deny these later claims. Here the traditions clearly diverge.
