The Royal Titulary — the Fivefold Name
Every king took five names at his crowning, each a small theology of his reign.
A full Egyptian king's name was not one name but a sequence of five, adopted at accession: the Horus name, the Two Ladies name, the Golden Horus name, the throne name (introduced by 'King of Upper and Lower Egypt'), and the birth name (introduced by 'Son of Ra'). Each proclaimed something about his reign. Because kings are often known by different ones of these names in different sources, careful identification matters.
