Egyptians thought of their country as two lands joined: Upper Egypt (the southern Nile valley) and Lower Egypt (the northern Delta), each with its own crown, patron goddess, and symbolic plant. The king was 'Lord of the Two Lands,' and uniting them was the founding act of Egyptian kingship, tied in tradition to the first king (often called Menes). The 'unification of the Two Lands' was re-enacted symbolically throughout Egyptian history.
