Emanation (Procession)
Reality overflows from the One like light from the sun — undimmed at its source, each level fainter as it descends.
Plotinus taught that all of reality flows forth from a single supreme source, the One, the way light streams from the sun or warmth radiates from fire — without the source ever being depleted. From the One overflows Intellect, from Intellect the Soul, and from Soul the visible world, each level a fainter image of the one above it. This "procession" is not an event in time but an eternal, gradual unfolding, and it offers a third path between the deliberate creation of a maker-god and the blind chance of the atomists. Every emanated thing also yearns to "return" toward its source, completing the great cosmic rhythm.
