Korban (Sacrificial Offering, generic)
A gift brought to the Temple — the central act of ancient Jewish worship, expressing gratitude, atonement, or covenant commitment.
In ancient Jewish life, when someone wanted to honor God, seek forgiveness, or give thanks, they brought an animal — a cow, sheep, goat, or bird — to the Temple. This was a ritual gift. The animal was offered on the altar, parts of it burned while other portions were eaten by the priests or the person who brought it. It functioned as a solemn, costly act of communication: a way of saying through deed and resource what words alone could not fully express.
Different situations called for different offerings. A careless sin required one kind; wronging someone and making restitution required another; festivals called for communal offerings on behalf of the whole people. The rules governing each type were detailed and carefully preserved.
After the Temple was destroyed, these rituals could no longer be performed, but their memory remained central to Jewish learning and prayer. Rabbinic tradition taught that study of the sacrificial laws carries its own value, and that prayer took on some of the role once filled by offerings. Over time, various Jewish thinkers — including Kabbalists — developed richer interpretations of what the offerings signified, reading them as expressions of deeper truths about intention, divine relationship, and spiritual repair. These interpretations are part of how the tradition continued to find meaning in laws that could no longer be practiced.
