Paris

France

Paris, on the Seine, is the capital of France. Its university grew out of the cathedral schools around 1150 and was chartered in 1200; the Sorbonne, a theological college founded around 1257, later lent it its name. The Academy of Sciences, founded in 1666 under Louis XIV, helped make the city a leading centre of European science. Paris had a medieval Jewish community, whose copies of the Talmud were burned in 1242 after the Disputation of Paris, and today it has Europe's largest Jewish population. In 1884 the Islamic reformers Muhammad Abduh and Jamal al-Din al-Afghani published their journal al-Urwa al-Wuthqa there, and in the 1950s the Sri Lankan monk Walpola Rahula studied Mahayana Buddhism at the Sorbonne.
