Second Council of Nicaea (787)

Smashing icons or honoring them? The council that defended sacred images

Held in 787, this seventh ecumenical council responded to iconoclasm, the movement to destroy religious images. It restored the veneration of icons, teaching that honor paid to an image passes to the one it depicts, not the wood and paint themselves. Traditions differ in reception: the Catholic and Orthodox churches accept it, while the Reformed tradition rejects the veneration of images.
