Iconoclasm

The drive to smash sacred images as idols — and the long quarrel it left behind

Iconoclasm is the movement that opposed making and venerating religious images, condemning them as idolatry. In the Byzantine East, iconoclast emperors enforced it until it was condemned at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787. The dispute did not end there: the impulse to reject images reappeared in the Reformed tradition, so traditions still differ over whether sacred images honor God or violate his command.
