Korban Pesach (The Pesach Sacrifice)
The lamb slaughtered and eaten on Passover eve in Temple times — the original act at the heart of the Exodus story.
In ancient times, the Passover sacrifice was the centerpiece of springtime Jewish observance. Each household would select a lamb, slaughter it at the Temple with communal ceremony, roast it whole, and eat it together before dawn — all while dressed for travel, as if ready to depart at any moment. This was a living re-enactment of the night when God passed over Israelite homes while striking Egypt, and the people rushed toward freedom.
After the Temple's destruction nearly two thousand years ago, this sacrifice became impossible, and Jewish practice shifted in response. Families developed new rituals — the symbolic foods on the Passover plate, the retelling of the Exodus story, the unleavened bread — that preserved the memory and meaning of that original night. The lamb did not disappear from Jewish consciousness; its image remained on the Seder plate and in the Haggadah's retelling.
Rabbis and thinkers across the centuries continued to examine what made this particular act so central: Why a lamb? Why roasted whole and not boiled? Why eaten in haste? These questions opened sustained conversations about redemption, covenant, and the relationship between ritual form and historical memory — conversations that span legal, philosophical, and interpretive literature across many generations.
