Maoz Tzur, often translated “Mighty Rock,” is the beloved hymn traditionally sung after lighting the Chanukah candles, especially in Ashkenazi homes. Its verses thank God for rescuing Israel across history, recalling deliverance from Egypt, Babylon, Haman in the Purim story, and the Greeks in the Chanukah story, before turning toward the hope for final redemption. The opening letters of the early stanzas form an acrostic spelling the name of its medieval author, Mordechai.
