Shem ע"ב (72-Letter Name)
The 72-letter Name of God — the Shem HaMephorash, a string of 72 three-letter 'names' (216 letters in all) drawn from three verses in Exodus, each a wellspring of divine power in Kabbalah.
The 72-letter Name, known as the Shem HaMephorash ('the explicit Name'), is formed from three consecutive verses in the splitting of the Red Sea (Exodus 14:19-21), each of which contains exactly 72 Hebrew letters. By weaving the three verses together — one read forward, the next backward, the third forward — the letters line up into 72 groups of three, giving 216 letters in total. Each three-letter group is treated as a Name in its own right, often paired with a suffix of God, and the set as a whole stands behind the famous '72 Names of God' used in Kabbalah for meditation, blessing, and protection (segulot). Tradition holds that this is the Name through which Moses split the sea. It should not be confused with the AB expansion (Shem Av), a separate idea in which the four-letter Name is spelled out so its letters add up to 72 — that expansion has its own entry on this site.
