Tum'at Zav / Zavah (Discharge Impurity)
Abnormal bodily discharges create a distinctive form of ritual impurity in Jewish law, with rules about transmission and purification worked out in Talmudic detail.
Jewish law, drawing from the Torah's Book of Leviticus, recognizes that certain abnormal bodily flows — beyond ordinary biological events — place a person in a state of ritual impurity. A man experiencing such a discharge is called a zav; a woman in an equivalent state is called a zavah. This impurity is not about shame or hygiene but about a legal status that temporarily bars the person from the Temple and from contact with sacred items.
What distinguishes zav and zavah impurity is its high degree of transmissibility. Unlike some forms of impurity that require direct touch, a zav or zavah can convey impurity through pressure — by sitting or lying on objects that others then use. This led to detailed rabbinic discussion in the Mishnah tractate Zavim about how contamination spreads and what kinds of contact count. The purification process requires waiting, immersion, and in Temple times, specific offerings.
These laws were part of the broader purity system that governed Temple-era Jewish life. With the Temple's destruction, most practical application fell away, though the underlying principles continued to be studied and helped shape related areas of law that remain in force, such as the laws of niddah. The legal categories of zav and zavah are treated throughout the Talmud as technical halachic matters, while later mystical writers occasionally read them as reflecting spiritual states — one thread among many in a primarily legal tradition.
