Troyes (Champagne)טרוייש

Champagne, France

Troyes, in Champagne in northeastern France, is the capital of the Aube department. From the late ninth century it was the capital of the counts of Champagne, and its medieval fairs drew merchants from across Christendom. A church council held there in 1129 recognised the Knights Templar, and Pope Urban IV, a cobbler's son from the city, began its Gothic Basilica of Saint-Urbain in 1262. Troyes was also the home of Rashi (1040–1105), who studied in the Rhineland and returned to lead the local rabbinic court and teach; his grandsons, including Rashbam and Rabbeinu Tam, were among the most prolific of the Tosafists.
