Particular Judgment

At the moment of death, the soul meets its own reckoning

The particular judgment is the judgment of each soul immediately at death, before the general judgment at the end of time. It developed in Western scholastic teaching and was addressed at the Council of Florence. The traditions differ in emphasis: Catholic teaching affirms it clearly, while Orthodox and Protestant eschatology leave the soul's state between death and resurrection less formally defined.
