Nomos vs Physis

The great Greek argument: is justice rooted in nature itself, or just a human convention that could have been otherwise?

Nomos (custom or law) versus physis (nature) was the defining debate of 5th-century BCE Greek thought, sharpened by the Sophists. Thinkers like Protagoras, Antiphon, and Callicles asked whether moral rules reflect a real natural order or are artificial conventions that vary from city to city. Dramatized in Herodotus, Thucydides, and Plato's dialogues, the question set the agenda for every later Western debate about natural law, relativism, and the basis of justice.
