Substance
The independent reality that has properties but is never itself a property of anything else.
Substance (ousia) is, for Aristotle (4th c. BCE), the primary sense of being — the individual thing (this man, this horse) that exists in its own right and underlies its changing qualities. He made it the central category of the Categories and the core problem of the Metaphysics, debating whether substance is the concrete particular, its matter, or its form. The concept shaped all later metaphysics, from medieval scholasticism to Descartes and Spinoza.
