Ahavah / Yirah (Love / Awe of God)
Love and awe of God are two foundational orientations in Jewish religious life, woven through biblical commands, medieval philosophy, and mystical practice alike.
The Torah commands both love of God — "with all your heart, soul, and might" (Deuteronomy 6:5) — and awe or reverence of God. These two orientations have been explored and developed across the full range of Jewish thought.
Medieval philosophers like Maimonides treated love and awe as rational-emotional states cultivated through understanding God's greatness and the natural world. Ethical writers in the musar tradition emphasized their role in shaping character and motivating observance. The pair appears repeatedly in the Talmud and in the writings of the Rishonim as the twin engines of authentic religious commitment.
Kabbalistic and Hasidic thinkers gave these concepts additional depth, mapping love and awe onto the structure of the sefirot and treating their cultivation as a central practice of inner spiritual work. The Zohar and later Hasidic masters developed detailed teachings on how to awaken love and awe through prayer and contemplation. This mystical elaboration is an important and influential strand — but love and awe of God had been central to Jewish teaching long before Kabbalah, and they remain so across communities that approach them in very different ways.
