The Categories
Ten basic ways of saying what something is — substance, quantity, quality, relation, and the rest of Aristotle's list.
The Categories (katēgoriai) are Aristotle's (4th c. BCE) list of the most general kinds of things you can say about a subject: substance, quantity, quality, relation, place, time, position, having, acting, and being-acted-upon. Laid out in the short treatise that opens his logical works (the Organon), they shaped logic, grammar, and metaphysics for centuries and were a staple of medieval Arabic, Jewish, and Latin scholarship.
