The Household & Economy
The ancient Greek household — family, property, and servants together — was the city's basic building block and the birthplace of 'economics.'
The oikos was the Greek household as an economic and social unit: kin, land, and slaves under a single male head. The art of running it, oikonomia, is the literal source of our word 'economy.' In Politics I, Aristotle (4th c. BCE) treated the household as the natural foundation on which the village and ultimately the polis are built, while Xenophon's Oeconomicus offered a practical guide to managing one. The concept anchored ancient thinking about property, gender roles, and the line between private and public life.
