Bitachon (Trust in God)
Trust in God — a Jewish virtue of genuine reliance on divine providence that frees a person to act with integrity rather than anxiety.
Bitachon is not passive faith or wishful thinking — it is a lived attitude of trust that shapes how a person moves through the world. The concept holds that one who genuinely relies on God to provide what is needed can stop obsessing over security, stop cutting corners to get ahead, and instead focus energy on what is actually within reach: character, choices, and care for others.
The idea has deep roots in medieval Jewish ethical and philosophical literature. Bachya ibn Paquda devoted an entire section of his eleventh-century guide Chovot HaLevavot (Duties of the Heart) to bitachon, defining it carefully as active trust grounded in reason and knowledge of God — not fatalism. Later ethicists and legal thinkers continued to shape the concept, debating exactly how trust in God relates to the obligation to make a living and take normal precautions.
What makes bitachon distinctive is that it does not replace human effort. You work, you plan, you act — but without the paralysis of fear or the corruption of greed. Later Hasidic teachers gave the concept a warmer, more intimate coloring, emphasizing trust as a remedy for despair and a foundation for joy. Across all these streams, the core insight remains: trusting that what one needs will come frees a person to be honest, generous, and fully present to life.
