The Care of the Soul

Socrates roamed Athens with one relentless question: why polish your body and purse while letting the soul, your truest self, run to ruin?

For Socrates, the whole point of being human was to tend one's soul — the seat of character, reason, and virtue — above money, status, or physical comfort. In Plato's Apology he describes himself as a gadfly sent to shame his fellow Athenians for neglecting it, insisting that "the unexamined life is not worth living." Later thinkers, especially the Stoic Epictetus and the essayist Plutarch, made this inward cultivation the daily work of philosophy: a regimen of self-scrutiny and self-improvement. The idea became one of antiquity's most enduring legacies, shaping later notions of conscience, spiritual discipline, and the examined life.
