Faculties of the Soul
Aristotle's ladder of life: the soul's stacked powers — nutrition, sensation, thought — each higher rung containing the ones below.
The 'faculties' or powers of the soul (dynameis psyches) are Aristotle's way (On the Soul II–III, 4th c. BCE) of analyzing life as a graded set of capacities. At the base is the nutritive and reproductive power shared by all living things; above it, the perceptive power of animals (along with desire and movement); and at the top, the rational power unique to humans. Each level builds on and includes the ones beneath it, so a single soul performs many jobs at once. This faculty psychology became the backbone of medieval and early-modern accounts of the mind, from Aquinas down to the 18th century.
