The Tripartite Soul

Plato pictured the soul as three forces in tension — reason, spirit, and appetite — like a charioteer steering two horses.

In the Republic and Phaedrus (4th c. BCE), Plato argues that the soul has three parts: a rational part that seeks truth, a spirited part that feels honor, anger, and ambition, and an appetitive part that craves food, drink, and sex. Justice within a person, he says, means each part doing its own job under the rule of reason — a balance mirrored in the three classes of his ideal city. The model gave Western thought a lasting vocabulary for inner conflict. His pupil Aristotle and the later Platonists reworked it, and its echoes reach the Jewish tripartite soul of nefesh, ruach, and neshamah.
